Structure of a Verb Phrase

  • Simple Verb Phrase

Example:

  • Complex Verb Phrase
It contains the main verb along with auxiliary verbs, and may also include objects, complements, or modifiers.
Example:

Types of Verb Phrases

  • Main Verb Phrase
A verb phrase that contains only the main verb (without auxiliaries).
Example:

The phrase "runs" is the main verb phrase, consisting of the verb "runs" alone.
  • Auxiliary Verb Phrase
A verb phrase that contains a main verb along with one or more auxiliary verbs.

The phrase "is reading" contains the auxiliary verb "is" and the main verb "reading."
  • Modal Verb Phrase
A verb phrase that contains a modal verb (e.g., can, could, will, would, may, might, must, shall, should) along with the main verb.
Example:

The phrase "can swim" includes the modal verb "can" and the main verb "swim."
  • Phrasal Verb
A verb phrase that combines a main verb with a preposition or adverb, creating a new meaning different from the original verb.
Example:

The phrase "gave up" is a phrasal verb where "gave" is the main verb and "up" is the particle, together meaning "quit."
