Question Tags / Tag Questions

Sering kali kita dibuat bingung dengan istilah question khususnya question tags. Kita sering menjumpai beberapa referensi yang membuat istilah question tags tapi juga ada beberapa referensi yang menyatakan dengan istilah tag questions. Pada dasarnya question tags dan tag questions mempunyai makna yang sama atau mempunyai konteks yang sama.

Question tag atau tag question adalah pertanyaan singkat atau pertanyaan sederhana yang terdapat pada akhir kalimat. Question tag atau tag question digunakan untuk meminta persetujuan atau penegasan apakah sesuatu hal tersebut benar.

Pada dasarnya pola dari question tags atau tag questions mempunyai kesamaan dengan question sentence atau kalimat pertanyaan pada umumnya yaitu tetap memunculkan tanda tanya pada akhir kalimat dan mempunyai pola yang tidak jauh berbeda dengan YES/NO Question akan tetapi yang membedakan adalah adanya beberapa kata yang dihilangkan/diellipsis.

Affirmative	She is beautiful.
Negative	She is not beautiful.
Interrogative	Is she beautiful?
Negative Interrogative	Isn't she beautiful?
Negative Tag	She is beautiful, isn't she?
No-negative Tag	She is not beautiful, is she?

 Terdapat beberapa atauran pada penggunaan question tags atau tag questions

👉Pola kalimat dan question tag

Jika pola kalimat berupa pernyataan (statement) positive atau affirmative, maka question tag atau tag question berpola negative dan begitu sebaliknya. Jika pola kalimat berupa pernyataan (statement) negative, maka question tag atau tag question berpola positive atau affirmative.

It is cold,	isn't it?

It is not warm,	is it?

👉Auxiliary verbs

Jika pada kalimat utama terdapat auxiliary verb (kata kerja bantu), maka auxiliary (kata kerja bantu) tersebut diulang kembali atau digunakan pada pola question tag-nya dan jika kalimat utama tidak terdapat auxiliary verb (kata kerja bantu), maka kata kerja pada question tag merujuk pada tenses yang digunakan.

Santi can speak English, can't she?

You did not do the test, did you?

Harry goes to the cinema, doesn't he?

👉Subject tag

Subject pada question tag harus berupa pronoun (kata ganti) yang merujuk pada subject di kalimat utamanya.

The question is very easy, isn't it?

John and Betty were not swimming in that swimming pool, were they?

👉Negative words

Jika pada kalimat utama terdapat negative words (kata-kata yang menunjukkan makna negatif) seperti; Never, no, nobody, hardly, scarcely, little, seldom, rarely dan sebagaianya, maka pola pada question tag harus berupa positive

It has hardly rained  at all this summer, has it? (bukanlah hasn't it?)

They seldom help their friends, do they? (bukanlah don't they?)

👉Somebody, Nobody, Nothing dll (indefinite pronoun)

Subject tag berupa "it" jika subject utamanya merujuk pada "thing" atau bukan orang (something, everything, nothing)

Nothing can happen, can it?

Everything will be better, won't it?

Subject tag berupa "they" jika subject utamanya merujuk pada "person" atau orang (someone, somebody, everyone, everybody, no one, nobody)

Somebody wanted a drink, didn't they?

Nobody phoned, did they?

👉Setelah Imperative (kalimat perintah)

Setelah kalimat perintah, question tag yang sering digunakan adalah will/would/can/could you? yang secara makna setara jika kita menggunakan "please!"

Give me a hand, will you?

Open the window, would you?

👉Setelah invitation (kalimat ajakan)

Setelah kalimat ajakan (invitation), question tag yang digunakan adalah shall we? yang secara makna setara jika kita menggunakan "please!"

Let's go home, shall we?
